The Connections Gallery is seeking submissions for our annual Emergence photography group show in December 2017. This twelve person group show showcases artists who are new to the gallery or have new work.

Four artists will be chosen by a jury to exhibit their work in Montreal in Spring 2018.

This show will also be advertised in the Winter issue of Canadian Art.

Alternative Photo Printmaking Demos and Vintage Portraits

October 1st and 2nd

10am-5pm


Watch a demo for historical printing processes platinum palladium and multiple gum over. Then have your portrait taken with a vintage camera!

Bob Carnie, master printer will briefly present the various steps involved and show you one part of the process.
Photographer Aurélien Muller will be combining the tech of a 21st century digital camera with a 19th century camera to take your portrait, creating an accumulative pop up portrait show in the gallery.

Demonstrations are 45 minutes long and will start on the hour from 10am with the last demo starting at 4pm
Portraits will be ongoing from 10am-5pm

Activities are the same for both days.

Where are you from and what attracts you to colour?

I grew up in Washington D.C. For me Washington wasn’t so much a city of monuments as a cluster of villages surrounded by forests and streams. Living with my divorced mother as a rebellious teenager, I often drifted into Glover Archbold Park, a sliver of green that stretches north-south more than two miles from Cathedral Heights to the Potomac River. The city’s woods offered secluded hollows of serenity, a powerful salve in my life at that time.

We are putting a travelling show together that will exhibit in three cities: First Washington DC and New Orleans (March/April  2017) as pop up shows, then back to the Dylan Ellis Gallery in Toronto for the Contact Photo Festival in May 2017.
As you may know our Lambda is back up in operation, which means specific quality film being available for many alternative print options that Bob specializes in. Contact print in Silver Gelatin, Lith Silver Gelatin, Solarization Silver Gelatin, Contact Platinum Palladiums, Contact Duotones of pigment over Palladium, and of course Tri Colour Pigment over Palladium.
Our last two fantastic Contact shows were incredible successes, with Rita Leistner leading the way in 2015 followed this year with Monica Glitz.
Both bodies of work were in tri color pigment over palladium and were excellent examples of what great photography can be.
The idea is to create a large show from photographers from any location willing to work with Bob and create up to two images each of your best work. Whether its colour pigment, silver gelatin or expressive lith prints we will make the decision together and create a one of a kind print that you can be proud of.
Time Line
Now until January production of work. We have already accepted submissions and will be continuing to do so on a rolling basis

March 31-April 1- Ace Hotel New Orleans
May 15 2017-June 17 2017 – Two weeks during the Contact Photo Festival
Cost
$725 plus GST – per image submitted – two prints maximum per show

Service Spotlight: Lambda

What does the Lambda do and why is this service so exciting for photographers? 

We just set back up our Durst Lambda to operational status, but at the same time threw out the wet colour RA4 process. For us the gamut and options for inkjet printing far out step dye coupler prints. We use the lambda to produce direct silver gelatin prints from any source digital or film. In fact little known fact is that my company was the first company world wide to produce digital silver gelatin prints in 2002 four years before the big 5 labs in the world started offering the service.

Contact Photo: Q&A with printer Bob Carnie

Our 2016 Contact Photo Festival feature is photographer Monica Glitz.

Monica will be showcasing her works from her Ancient Splendor series that documents UNESCO World Heritage sites. Each print featured in the show will be made using alternative printmaking processes.

Why platinum palladium and tri-colour?

We have chosen these two processes as they have the look, texture and feeling of work done in the very beginning of photographic printmaking. These images are of historically significant subjects that have been preserved, but also worn down by time. Contemporary prints cannot give us the colour palette and physical sense that these two processes offer. In both cases the paper is arches platine, which is produced in France and has been offered for over three hundred years.The noble metal of platinum palladium sinks into the very fabric of this paper and any resulting pigment is layered on top for an exquisite image.
